Operations include welding, fitting and machining. Southern Heat Exchanger is a part of the NDA Group based in Hamilton, New Zealand and has plants in Tuscaloosa, Houston, New Zealand, and Australia.

Welder

Primary responsibilities will include:
  • Complete all welding on sub-assemblies and complete heat exchangers
  • Read prints to determine weld types
  • May be required to in other areas of production
  • Ensure a clean and safe work area
  • Ability to work overtime as required
  • Be an active participant in the SHECO quality assurance program

The successful candidate should have several years of fitting experience. The candidate should be highly motivated and results oriented to contribute in a team environment and have the ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects. This position will report to a supervisor and compensation will be commensurate with experience.

Quality Control Manager

Southern Heat Exchanger Corporation, a leader in the Shell and Tube Heat Exchanger Industry for over 50 years, is currently looking for a qualified QC Manager. Southern Heat Exchanger is a part of the NDA Group based in Hamilton, New Zealand and has plants in Tuscaloosa, Houston, New Zealand, and Australia.

The selected candidate will join a growing organization as a vital and strategic member of the manufacturing team in Houston. Primary responsibilities will include:

  • Assure final product meets or exceeds the ASME Code of Construction along with Sheco and customer standards, specifications and drawings.
  • Monitor the continuous improvement of systems and processes essential to maintaining a focus on quality.
  • Communicate with Sales, Engineering and Production regarding quality issues, inspections, audits, welding requirements, etc.
  • Computer experience with a good working knowledge of MS Office products

The successful candidate must have a minimum of 5 years quality experience in a metal fabrication environment, be highly motivated, results oriented and a self-starter to perform in a team environment. The candidate should be thorough and detail-oriented with strong follow-through skills and abilities. An ability to correctly choose between competing priorities and to successfully manage multiple projects is also necessary. The candidate should possess strong interpersonal and communication skills and be comfortable interacting with employees, customers, and contractors, both in person and over the phone. This position will report to the Operations Manager and compensation will be commensurate with experience. Extensive background checks will be conducted.

Key Responsibilities and Expected Results

Quality Control
  • Check and inspect incoming materials (Dimensions, MTRs, etc)
  • Check and inspect fit up operations
  • Monitor shop operations to ensure that jobs are completed according to the drawings and specifications provided by SHECO engineering
  • Monitor shop operations to ensure that units are completed with zero defects and that shop procedures, quality assurance guidelines and NDT requirements are strictly adhered to
  • Coordinate hold points with 3rd party inspectors, customers, and production department
  • Review, revise and/or establish weld procedures for jobs as required
  • Schedule inspection and code reviews with Authorized Inspector
  • Collect and organize data for jobs
  • Responsible for timely distribution of customer data packages
  • Maintain QC files (job files, welder records, code books)
  • Maintain calibration of chart recorders, welding machines, pressure gauges, light meters, dead weight tester, helium leak standards and any other instruments that carry calibration deadlines
  • Schedule, witness, and record shop NDE tests and test results
  • Coordinate activities with inspection personnel
  • Interview prospective job applicants and schedule qualification tests
  • Provide guidance for qualification of new welders and maintain/modify qualifications of existing welders / operators as needed
  • Update and distribute procedures and QC manuals
  • Oversee all departments activities with respect to quality
  • Complete required paperwork per ASME and NBIC requirements
  • Read and interpret x-ray film
  • Evaluate welds made by FCAW, SAW, SMAW, GTAW, GMAW processes
  • Represent SHECO's quality department during customer or ASME audits
Customer / Inspector Relationships
  • Cultivate customer and inspector relationships to assure confidence and a strong reputation for quality
  • Assists with questions and informational requests in a timely manner
Education Required
High School Diploma or equivalent and 2 years related technical training
College Degree preferred
Experience
  • 5-7 years in quality in a similar metal fabrication industry
  • 5-7 years in an ASME code fabrication environment preferred
  • Certified Welding Inspector preferred
  • Fitting and/or welding experience preferred
  • ASNT NDT certification preferred (level I, II, or III)
  • Lean experience is a plus
Knowledge & Skills
  • Knowledge of exchanger testing and NDE techniques (PT, MT, RT, WFMT, UT), material classifications and handling techniques
  • Knowledge of ASME Section VIII Division 1 and Section I of ASME code. National Boiler Inspection Code.
  • Strong knowledge of metallurgy
  • Basic understanding of heat exchanger nomenclature and TEMA standards
  • Knowledge of basic welding and fit up techniques
  • Knowledge of welding processes and consumables
  • Ability to read blueprints and drawings
  • Ability to read, understand and apply detailed customer specifications
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (both verbal and written)
  • Personnel Management
  • Ability to maintain organized records
  • Computer skills which include e-mail, spreadsheet and word processing experience
